"Young People and Work in Portugal - Inequalities, (un)protection and the future" by Renato Miguel do Carmo (coordinator), Inês Tavares, Rodrigo Vieira de Assis, Ricardo Barradas and Fátima Suleman.
Despite the enormous progress that Portugal has made over the last five decades, both in terms of economic development and the continuous growth and consolidation of public education, health and social security systems, the current labor market continues to face structural weaknesses that affect the working and socio-economic conditions of a wide range of workers, especially young people.
Young People and Work in Portugal: inequalities, (un)protection and the future is the result of a series of analyses and reflections on the results of a survey of the young population carried out in partnership between the Inequalities Observatory and the Youth Employment Observatory.
Based on a sample of more than 5,000 respondents, it discusses the different ways in which young people enter and participate in the labor market, and the forms of social protection in employment that they use or access. The results show that different social backgrounds and origins affect aspirations and opportunities, and that belonging to different social categories is an attribute that not only generates social differentiation, but also strong levels of inequality among young people.
This book also puts forward priorities for public policies, so that they are increasingly effective in responding to the imbalances and trends identified.
