fAIces project website now available

This new institutional portal consolidates information regarding the objectives, team, and activities of the project, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the Horizon Europe program. The portal also provides a dedicated platform for the dissemination of research, publications, events, and news.
Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the fAIces project critically examines facial recognition technologies, mapping practices, controversies, and alternatives across five domains of action:
Scientific communities and research ecologies;
Startups and business/technological ecosystems;
NGOs and civic and protest movements;
Racialized communities and experiences of surveillance;
Artists, exploring visual and speculative languages.

The project is coordinated by Dr. Helena Machado, from the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon, in partnership with the University of Minho, bringing together a team dedicated to the study of the relationships between artificial intelligence, ethics, and society, and alternative futures for facial technologies.
