Creation of the Nucleus for Disability Studies
Researchers contribute to the deepening of the study of disability

17.02.2023

NED - Núcleo de Estudos da Deficiência - aims to contribute to the deepening of the study of disability in Portugal, Europe and the World, as a scientific partner of international organizations, States, municipalities, companies, associations and citizens, committed to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

This structure, coordinated by Professor and Researcher Luís Capucha and based at CIES-Iscte, was created in January 2023 and intends to act in a triangulation logic, i.e., articulating three fronts of institutional action: teaching, research and university extension.

On the teaching front, it is promoted through a postgraduate degree in Disability and Human Rights Studies and, as soon as approved by A3ES, an accessible master's degree in disability studies and human rights.

On the research front, the Nucleus adopts a multidisciplinary, pluriparadigmatic and methodologically open perspective, focusing on all areas of disability and policies for the promotion of human rights. At the operational level, it aims to raise funds for the development of projects, not only nationally, but also at the European level, with a view to developing advanced research to solve the main problems that people with disabilities, one of the most profoundly excluded social groups in contemporary societies, currently face.

As for the university extension component, it contemplates service provision actions in the areas of consulting, planning and evaluation, and dissemination/information, as well as training actions, conferences, colloquia, seminars, summer schools and an annual report.

CIES-Iscte researchers José Nogueira, Nuno Nunes and Lara Querido make up the technical team of NED, which aims to become a meeting place for all those who want to work on the issue of disability and human rights at Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon.
