CIES hosted another edition of Ciência Viva no Laboratório, dedicated to Society's challenges in the 21st century
The summer internship took place during the week of July 8 to 12, 2024, at Iscte - Knowledge and Innovation.
This initiative involved the participation of the Center for International Studies (CEI-Iscte), the Center for Social Research and Intervention (CIS-Iscte) and the Information Sciences, Technologies and Architecture Research Center (ISTAR-Iscte), which aimed to bring science closer to society by demonstrating how research can play an active role in identifying solutions, seeking not only to stimulate the scientific creativity of young people in the areas of Sociology, International Studies, Psychology and Digital Technologies, but also their ability to work as a team and contact specialists in these areas.
A group of nine secondary school students took part in this summer internship over the course of a week, with activities in the scientific areas of each center.
At CIES, the activity was the responsibility of researcher Rita Cachado, who explored the method of participant observation in ethnographic activities. In the first part of the activity, some theoretical concepts were explained, followed by a practical exercise in the field, where the participants chose the reality they wanted to observe in order to make a written, photographic or drawing record.
Finally, the participants were challenged to think critically about an everyday problem and reflect on possible solutions and hypotheses for its resolution.
