Fall School promotes intercultural dialog on climate change and migration

24.10.2024

The autumn school Facts First: Untangling the Nexus of Human (Im)Mobility and Climate in Europe, organized by CIES-Iscte in partnership with Philipps-Universität Marburg, under the coordination of Thais França, Violeta Alarcão and Raquel Matias (CIES-Iscte), together with Anna-Christine Link and Thomas Brenner (Philipps-Universität Marburg), took place between October 22 and 24 at Iscte.

The event was attended by 20 students of different nationalities, from Portugal and Germany, and by more than 50 students from different countries, such as Ghana, Pakistan, India and Canada, promoting an intercultural dialog on the subject. The event was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

During the various interactive sessions, the valuable contributions of sociological theories to the analysis of the phenomenon in question were explored, along with an investigation of the methodologies applicable to research on the topic. Panels made up of experts on climate change and migration offered participants the opportunity to critically discuss existing narratives, fostering an environment rich in knowledge exchange. Complementing these activities, a session dedicated to science communication was held, with the aim of improving participants' skills in this fundamental competence. On this occasion, strategies were presented for communicating effectively with different audiences, ensuring that scientific knowledge transcends the barriers of specialization and becomes accessible to a wide and diverse audience.

In addition, the students carried out fieldwork, applying a survey to find out people's perceptions of climate change and immigration. The data collected will be analyzed in the future for the publication of a scientific article.

The event will have a second phase in December, when a science slam will be held in Germany. On this occasion, students from Portugal will travel to Marburg, where, together with students from Philipps-Universität Marburg, they will present a science slam based on the discussions held during the event.
