CIES‑Iscte Researchers Recognized with Awards

The Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES‑Iscte) at the Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon congratulates João Moreira and Luana do Rocio Taborda, former PhD students of the centre, for the awards they have recently received.

João Moreira, a Sociology graduate from Iscte and doctoral candidate within the Interuniversity Doctoral Programme in History: Change and Continuity in a Global World, was awarded the History of Europe Award 2025 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for his dissertation entitled “Portuguese Intellectuals and the Idea of the Left in a Time of Transition (1968‑1986): The Cases of António José Saraiva, Eduardo Prado Coelho, and João Martins Pereira.” His dissertation, defended with distinction at Iscte and developed at CIES‑Iscte under the supervision of Professors Luísa Tiago de Oliveira and Rui Bebiano, had previously been recognized with the Mário Soares‑Fundação EDP 2023 Award and the Victor de Sá Award for Contemporary History 2023, highlighting its innovative contribution to the study of Portuguese contemporary history.

Similarly, sociologist Luana do Rocio Taborda, who completed her PhD in Sociology at Iscte, received the FIBE – Brazil Europe Integration Forum Award for her research entitled “Religious Associativism in Brazil and Portugal: Incentives and Action Repertoires in the Public Arenas of Catholic Associations at the ‘Heart of the Church.’” Conducted in co-supervision with ISCTE and the Federal University of Santa Catarina, her study was recognized for its originality and its contribution to the academic dialogue between Brazil and Europe. She is currently undertaking postdoctoral research in Political Science at São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho.
