Letras em marcha: Escritos de circunstância e gazetas portuguesas durante a guerra peninsular, 1808-1810
New e-Working Paper CIES

The CIES-Iscte has made available, in open access, a new e-working paper authored by doctoral student João Vítor, focusing on the role of the printed word in the context of the Peninsular War.

The study examines literary production in the Portuguese Empire between 1808 and 1810, drawing on gazettes and occasional writings published in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro. Combining statistical analysis with content analysis, the paper explores both patterns in the circulation of printed material and the discursive strategies mobilised during this critical period.

The findings highlight rapid changes in the circulation of the printed word in response to political developments, as well as an expansion of readership in both centres of the empire. The study also shows how increased printing activity was accompanied by effective communication strategies, capable of reaching broader audiences and contributing to the construction of a consensus against French forces.

By shedding light on the role of print culture in the Portuguese war effort, this e-working paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between communication, politics and society in historical contexts of conflict.
