The Center for Research and Studies in Sociology of Iscte was founded in 1985 by a group of professors from the field of sociology at Iscte, with the aim of creating a formal space to develop joint research activities and, in this way, contribute to the advancement of knowledge and to the development of society.
With Sociology as its central scientific field, the Centre quickly established itself as a reference in this domain, expanding its scope of activity to areas such as public policies, political science, communication sciences, modern and contemporary history, and social work.

Throughout its history, CIES has played a prominent role in social sciences research, aligning itself with international standards of excellence and maintaining a strong presence in the production, circulation, and social translation of knowledge.

This exhibition invites visitors to explore the evolution of CIES since its foundation and to discover the main axes that currently structure its activities: from scientific initiatives to the ways in which the institution builds and communicates its identity; from contributions to advanced training through doctoral programmes to editorial practices that broaden access to knowledge; from the structures that support research to actions that promote scientific culture and bring science closer to society. Each of these axes presents significant elements of a collective journey, revealing a centre in permanent dialogue with the world it studies.
Visit our exhibition until 31 December 2025 in the central atrium on the 2nd floor of Building 4, Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon.
